United Way
Best Beginnings

This is one of the first United Way offices in the world to deploy maps on Esri ArcGIS for organizations.

The United Way of Yellowstone County, serving Billings, Montana and the surrounding county hired Geodata  Services, Inc. and Triple Divide Consulting to provide training and develop a new Maps and Stats program.  Supporting the Best Beginnings early childhood collaboration and other programs, the goal was to provide web maps and geospatial data for clients and partners.

The project involved 12 weeks of training and facilitation for web mapping for early childhood development and support for a broad collaboration of Billings and Yellowstone County agencies, corporations and non-governmental organizations.  Web maps for reading proficiency, housing, crime, food and medicine insecurities, healthy family activities, demographic and economic characteristics, community infrastructure and analysis grids were developed and are in ongoing maintenance.

Broadband Mapping

Geodata Services has been assisting in preparing the National Broadband Map through TetraTech who serves as prime contractor on broadband mapping in Montana and North Dakota. The Montana Broadband mapping effort is under the Montana Department of Commerce, and the North Dakota effort is under the Department of Administration. Nationally, the NTIA and FCC took the national broadband map live on 02/17/2011. The Montana and North Dakota broadband web maps have been publicly available since 2011. This was the first national effort to map broadband availability for wired and wireless coverage throughout the US. The effort is one part of the National Broadband Plan.

Sustainable GIS for Rural Local Governments

Geodata Services, Inc. partnered with four rural counties in Montana to develop sustainable GIS programs based on ArcGIS Online for Organizations.  The four Montana counties Blaine, Lincoln, Sanders, Teton competed for and received grants from the Montana Land Information Act Council for one year of collaborative web mapping, community quality of life mapping and GIS training in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Desktop. Goals of the program are to leverage cloud computing and web maps to utilize GIS throughout the county organization, putting maps and map tools in the hands of local law enforcement, rural fire department, commissioners, planners, sanitarians, weed mappers and emergency response personnel.  Citizens are engaged in crowdsourcing and building important rural maps and infrastructure that is typically only found in cities and urban areas.  Building sustainable GIS programs in rural areas and peer to peer collaboration between neighboring counties is a primary goal.  The program began in August, 2014 and web maps will soon be available from each county.
